"IBNT" KHALDOUN!

ImageThe Ibn Khaldoun Award Program Steering Committee (a committee of the Tunisian-American Organization) announced today that it has selected Dr Mounia M. Charrad as the recipient of the inaugural Ibn Khaldoun Award for her distinguished service to the Tunisian-American community. The Selection Committee believes that her research and writing have contributed to bringing a better understanding of Tunisian society, history and culture to American universities, students, and educated public. The Committee believes that her classes helped students dispel misconceptions about Tunisia. The public lectures she had given at several universities such as Princeton, Michigan, Berkeley, Harvard and the University of Texas have brought attention to our Country about which even well informed Americans often know little and which they are glad to understand better.

More specifically, The committee thinks that her publications have emphasized the exceptional accomplishments of Tunisia with respect to women's rights and gender issues. This has been a consistent theme of her work and especially of her book, STATES AND WOMEN'S RIGHTS, for which she has received the recognition of her peers in the academic world in several disciplines ranging from sociology to political science and history.

The committee believes it is fair to say that American social scientists interested in questions of women's rights have been made aware of what happened in Tunisia with the Code of Personal Status, in part, through that book. Anyone working on such issues cannot ignore the Tunisian case.  The Committee wishes that you will join in honoring Dr. Charrad at the Ibn Khaldoun Award Hafla-2005. Gaza Taken Hostage!
Enacting a plan that has apparently been under preparation for months, Israel is at it again: an all out war against a civilan population of 2 million under seige in Gaza.  So far, over 400 have reportedly been killed and 2000 injured. The US administration is in transition and the US and the rest of world are celebrating the end of 2008 while civilians are terrorized by Israeli bombs, hunger and disease.  The crime is being marketed as an act of self defense!
