When attending a soccer game becomes a life-threatening adventure, we have to stop and evaluate our priorities. In Tehran, five fans were trampled to death after a soccer match against Japan. The incident happened as fans were trying to leave Azadi stadium after Iran's 2-1 victory over Japan in a World Cup 2006 qualifier. At least 40 others were hurt during the rush to the exits, several serious. A sixth fan is also believed to have died during the game due to a suspected heart attack caused by over-excitement. Several buses were also damaged due to violence after the contest.
Here we have people dying of over-excitement, others being crushed to death by exiting fans, and buses and property damaged by hooligans. Isn't time to take a time out and reflect on the root causes of such a twisted subversion of a game that is supposed to bring the best in people?
